Are you safe surfing the net?
So, how are you running your computer? Are you running as an administrator or limited user? Running as a limited user can save you from getting infected, so malicious software/virus will not have the rights of an administrator to modify or delete any files on your computer. You should also always install the windows security updates the moment they are released, in order to keep your system patched and up-to-date, so hackers don’t have the opportunity to have their way with your pc. Be aware that most malicious software does not always allow itself to be discovered on your pc. Most viruses are purposely hidden and are used as a back door for someone else to take control of your computer at will. Also, you should not click on links in emails or go to unknown/untrusted web sites. If you are using windows xp you should install windows defender, and allow it to run daily. It’s a free microsoft program that you can download from the mirosoft.com/downloads web page. Always run a virus scan on your pc and keep it up-to-date. I use A.V.G. as my virus scan, it’s free, it gets the job done, and it’s not bloated like Mcafee and Norton which can slow your computer down and cause wierd problems. You may also want to take a look at steady state, another microsoft program that can really lock down your computer and take it back to it’s original state at every reboot. Make sure you have your software firewall active and always use a router to get online, because the router is a hardware firewall that can keep bad people out. All these tips also work with Mac and Linux operating systems. Have fun and be safe online.
